Looking through the glass

“Curiouser and curiouser.” - Lewis Carroll from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

This month's Clickin Mom's photography challenge is to take photographs through glass.  Surprisingly my kids were all enthusiastic to help me out on this one!  It was a beautiful day outside and they just couldn't understand what I was doing outside and they were stuck in :)  Their curiosity translated into some cute pictures, in my opinion.  Don't worry, once I got my shots they bee-lined to the swing set!

Playing "ET"... Katie got a kick out of this.

Ally playing along...although she had the dog on a leash ready to run outside as soon as I gave her the thumbs up.

Bloom

This weeks Project 52 theme is bloom.... which is a bit tricky because my yard is a little barren.  Yesterday the weather was beautiful so the kids and I went looking for flowers and we found our first little dandelion popping up.  If you know me... in a few weeks my yard will be a blanket of yellow (#neighborshateme) but the kids and I just adore dandelions.  They are pretty, they give you wishes and they make excellent macro photography subjects.  Now to just wait for their seeds to pop up for more photos :)  enjoy...

supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Growing up, I loved to use my imagination.  Maybe that's why I found the movie, Mary Poppins so fascinating.  It was a whole world full of magic!  I can't help feel that way when we go to places like the old carousel in Faust park.  My daughter is a joy to watch in these types of places- ok she's a joy to me in any kind of place- but it's days like this we just marvel in Katie's joy.

We recently went there for a birthday party and I thought it would be a perfect place to take on the Clickin' Moms blog circle challenge of the month - interesting perspectives. We had a great time and I think that these shots have some out-of-the-ordinary views!  So ride along with me on my photo journey for the month.  Ready?

Ah!  Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!  He traveled all around the world, and everywhere he went, he'd use his word, and all would say, "There goes a clever gent!"

Katie has Williams syndrome which is a rare genetic disorder.  It greatly affects her behavior in quite a positive way most of the time.  Katie has emotions to the extreme.  She senses things in her surroundings more intensely than your average kid and things like spinning and bright lights make her squeal with excitement.  So you can imagine that she was in heaven on the horse, so to speak...

Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious, if you say it loud enough, you'll always sound precocious! Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Katie expresses herself with so much excitement when she sees or feels something she loves. She adores the sensory input. The lights, the music, the motion... it puts her into a very happy place and that happiness is incredibly contagious! I have a feeling she'll be an amusement park "junky" in her future ;)

You know, you can say it backwards, which is "docious-ali-expi-istic-fragil-cali-rupus" - but that's going a bit too far, don't you think? Indubitably!

Motion

This week the Project 52 was photographing motion.  Here are a few of my favorites from the week :)

I practiced a little bit of everything with this one... photoshoping several photos together, self portraits with a tripod and continuous timer plus low indoor light.  Turned out pretty cool.. and accurate.  This is my life on the weekends!  I was hoping Kate would join in but once she sees that camera light flash she freezes, lol.

My other motion pics come from a swimming party that my daughter attended.  She LOVES swimming!

Marrying a Marler

When you marry a member of the Marler family, you not only gain a family of 40+ you gain a few pounds!  That's right, I said it!  The Marlers know how to make food right.  So, who do you think I decided to focus my Clickin Moms food  photography assignment for the month on?  You guessed it!  This particular get-together was for my daughter's 4th birthday.  She shared a party with cousin, Gretchen who turned 6.

A little prep... we were in charge of cupcakes!

 Katie's lady bug cupcake

Gretchen's camouflage cupcake

Ham and cheese sliders with caramelized onions and mustard

Potato zucchini soup in my mother in law's awesome copper pot

Beef soup with homemade dumplings

Italian salad with artichokes, pimentos, red onion and Parmesan

Hot, crusty bread

Katie's all time favorite- mac and cheese

Fondue with cheesecake, marshmallows and pretzels... and around 7 p.m. the potato chips landed there, too!

Happy birthday to my sweet Katie!

Project 52- week 7- Symmetry

This week's photo challenge was symmetry and I balked at it for a while.  I started the week thinking big like architecture and found myself feeling uninspired.  Then, on Thursday, my husband surprised me with flowers and it was an aha.... I wound up photographing a few simple things that I love; things that surround me everyday.  Here is what I came up with.

My Valentines Day gift from my husband was my inspiration for the photos this week.  He rarely gets me flowers so you can imagine how excited I was!  Listen boys...girls love roses.

Puppy Dog tails!  I love how my puggy's tail twists... and check out my new and improved logo I came up with this week!

Bone histology-  ok, I know that's weird but it's my favorite slide.  I started incorporating photography into my teaching a few years ago.  It's one of my favorite study tools and my students love it.  I took this photo using my camera and a microscope set at 40X.

Texture- Project 52 week 6 theme

Over a year ago, my husband ordered what was advertised as a "macro lens" on Amazon for something like $20. It turned out to be an attachment that only fits on my kit lens (rookie mistake).  At the time I didn't know much about my camera in the first place and I quickly forgot about it.  Recently, I had the opportunity to sneek away from the hubs and kiddos with a friend and visit the botanical gardens.  I thought that since this little trip away is just for fun I'd give the macro lens a go and see what it can do.  I thought it was really fun (and it makes me want a legitimate macro lens!)  The edges are really distorted but I found all sorts of awesome textures in the cacti and tropical botanicals in the greenhouses.  Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Orchids

Took this one with a super zoom lens!

 Cacti with the macro attachment

More cacti macro

Silk tree macro (this flower reminded me of the Lorax's truffula trees)

Palm fronds in the climatron.  I love the lines!

confession... I have a science nerd love affair with lichen.
